Fundraising for In Sue’s Name
Following the tragic death of his first child, daughter Sue Blasotta at the age of 42, David Taylor and his family have channelled their energies into fundraising for research into brain cancer, as well as raising public awareness and providing support to other families affected by this devastating disease. They founded the charity In Sue’s Name in 2014 with the intention of raising £1 million by 2027.
It all started in November 2011 when Sue was diagnosed with three lesions on her brain. Despite treatment, she tragically died just six weeks later, leaving her husband and two young children aged just 10 and 12. To honour her memory and to make sense of her loss, David decided to organise a number of Charity Golf Days to raise funds for research into brain cancer, and so In Sue’s Name was born. Over the years, there have been many fundraising events, including skydives, abseiling down the Orbit Tower at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, country-themed evenings, fun days and quizzes. Future plans include Jailbreaks, fun runs, zipwires and wing walks. Participants in any of these events always seem to have lots of fun as well as raising vital monies, so don’t hesitate to get involved in anything takes your fancy – you can keep up to date on all events via the main website.
If taking part in the events isn’t your thing, you could volunteer as a helper or you could sponsor an event – private and corporate sponsors are always welcome. Alternatively, there are options to donate or do your own fundraising (In Sue’s Name has its own TotalGiving page), or you can help just by spreading the word and raising awareness.
During her lifetime, Sue was a passionate fundraiser for Cancer Research UK, having lost several family members in this way. She completed various 5k runs and a sky dive, despite her fear of heights. This latter achievement was subsequently matched by her father at the age of 79 and, not to be outdone, her mother at 80!
Brain tumours are the biggest killer of people under the age of 40, including children, and the number of deaths is rising at a rate of about 2% per year. Despite this, national funding for brain tumour research amounts to just 1% of UK national government spending on cancer research. In Sue’s Name is the only national charity dedicated to sustainable research into brain tumours.
Every penny raised goes to the Blizard Institute in Whitechapel, London – the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at Queen Mary University of London.
Why I choose to support this charity – Helen Tovey
I first met David Taylor at a networking event and I was impressed not just by his story, but also by his passion and determination to turn such a devastating personal tragedy into something so big and meaningful for others. He has campaigned tirelessly to grow the charity and has secured the support of many big names.
David is a kind and generous man who sees the good in everyone, and the energy he exudes is infectious. He may be in his eighties now, but there is no stopping him and I want to do what I can to help him achieve £1 million by 2027.
